BRIEF HISTORY

During 26 years (1946-1972), the Department was headed by university professor Nicolae Starostenko - its initiator, who also laid the foundation of an internal medicine school in Moldova. Nicolae Starostenko carried out an extensive scientific activity, being the author of 117 published works, including 7 monographs. Under the leadership of this famous scientist, 28 doctoral theses and 4 habilitated doctoral theses in medical sciences were defended.

In the '50s and' 60s, the Department hired  academic staff from among Alma Mater graduates, who later became associate professors (A. Diordiţa, V. Socol, R. Coşciug, A. Botnari, A. Secrieru, Inna Kulakova, F. Ambros), and university professors (A. Izvoreanu).

Between 1972-1987, associate professor, Dr. A. Botnari took over as head of the Department.

From 1987 to 1993, the head of the department was associate professor, Dr. F. Ambros. During his tenure, a study room equipped with computers, a computer program and a test base for the assessment and self-assessment of students' knowledge were created.

Between 1993 - 2000, the Department was led by A. Danilov, university professor, Doctor Habilitated in medical sciences, author of over 100 scientific papers related, mainly, to cardiovascular pathology.

Since September 2000 until now, the Department has been headed by S. Matcovschi, university professor, Doctor Habilitated in medical sciences, under whose guidance 8 doctoral theses and 2 habilitated doctoral theses in medical sciences were defended. Upon the establishment of the Department of Internal Medicine, in 2010, Prof. S. Matcovschi was appointed head of department and head of discipline.
